1ST PHILIPPINE NATIONAL KENDO TOURNAMENT

The United Kendo Federation of the Philippines is proud to announce the staging of the first ever Philippine National Kendo Tournament! Over 100 representatives from all over the Philippines (specifically from the Cebu, Davao, IGA, Iloilo, and Manila Kendo Clubs) gathered together for this event on November 19- 20, 2016, in the Tire Center Sports Gymnasium in Caloocan City, Metro Manila.

The first day was a seminar day, where Nihon Kendo Kata and Bokuto Ni Yoru Kendo Kihon-waza Keiko-ho were taught. Day 2 was dedicated to the shiai itself. There were 3 divisions, Men’s Individuals, Women’s Individuals, and the Team Event. Both individual events were open only to Filipino kendoka, while the team event allowed foreign kendoka to compete.

The head shimpan was Naoko Morishima (7dan), the head sensei of Manila Kendo Club. She was ably assisted by other sensei of Manila Kendo Club, namely Tomo Akita (5dan), & Takahashi Tsutomu (4dan). Members of the IGA Kendo Club also volunteered as shimpan: Koji Igarashi (5dan), Nakagane Ryosuke (4dan), Kristopher Inting (3dan), Loida Estanilla Inting (3dan), Alain Duminy (3dan), & Dardsie Abriol-Santos (3dan). Davao Kendo Club also sent one shimpan volunteer: Matsuda Kazuya (3dan). Finally, visitors from Hong Kong, Masahiro Ono (6dan) & 西川孝和 Nishikawa Takazaku (6dan), and Vietnam, Võ Anh Nhân (2dan), completed the shimpan line up.

There were 47 registered participants for the Men’s Individuals, and out of this field 8 awardees were chosen.
Fighting Spirit Awards: Robert Dela Cruz (Manila Kendo Club), Franco Carlos Liu (IGA Kendo Club), Ian Earl Navarro (Manila Kendo Club), and Rikki Daniel Reyes (IGA Kendo Club)
3rd Place: Percy Ryan Gomez (Iloilo Kendo Club), and Ronald Villaroya (Manila Kendo Club)
2nd Place: Prince Mallari (IGA Kendo Club)
Men’s Individual Champion: Andre Brillantes (Manila Kendo Club)

There were 14 registered participants for the Women’s Individuals, and out of this field 6 awardees were chosen.
Fighting Spirit Awards: Dardsie Abriol-Santos (IGA Kendo Club), and Reida Jade Renovilla (Davao Kendo Club)
3rd Place: Elvira Inoue (Manila Kendo Club), and Tamorah Mae Sison (IGA Kendo Club)
2nd Place: Erica Abriol-Santos (IGA Kendo Club)
Women’s Individual Champion: Ethyl Jane Angeles (IGA Kendo Club)

There were 11 registered teams for the Team Event. 3 individual fighting spirit awards were given, in addition to the 4 team awards.
Fighting Spirit Awards: Robert Carabuena (Davao Kendo Club), Percy Ryan Gomez (Iloilo Kendo Club), and Mike Logarta (Cebu Kendo Club)
3rd Place: Turon Rangers of IGA Kendo Club (Erica Abriol-Santos, Jerome Martin Bautista, Verns Chiongbian, Koji Igarashi, Prince Mallari), and Victorious Secret of IGA Kendo Club (John Besa, Gerard Kevin Cagatan, Alain Duminy, Rikki Daniel Reyes, Tamorah Mae Sison, Munetoshi Tanaka)
2nd Place: Slam Dunk of IGA Kendo Club (Joshua Romeo Espiritu, Tatsuya Fujinari, Jan Rafael Javier, Ryosuke Nakagane, Dane Pio de Roda)
Team Champion: MKC A of Manila Kendo Club (Matthew P Arce, Tomo Akita, Andre Brillantes, Kosuke Morishima, Ian Earl Navarro, Ronald Villaroya)

We would like to thank and congratulate all the participants (especially the awardees), sensei, staff, and spectators who made this such a wonderful event. Plans are already being made to stage the 2nd edition of this event in Davao next year, and tentatively in Iloilo in 2018. We look forward to continual staging of this event over the coming years.
