DKCWhiteHISTORY OF DAVAO KENDO CLUB

Mr. Johnny T. Lardera, a Dabaweño by blood, was residing in Manila and planned on enrolling in Kendo, a sport popular in Japan which taught the virtues of discipline, camaraderie and strength in spirit. It was unfortunate, however, that due to conflicting responsibilities, he was forced to go back to Davao, which halted his plans on practicing Kendo. It was because back in 2012, Kendo was a relatively unknown sport to most Dabaweños. There were no Kendo clubs in Mindanao, much less in Davao City, at that time – the only Kendo clubs were located in the country’s capital. Undeterred, he decided to contact the only two kendo clubs in the Philippines – The Iga Kendo Club and the Manila Kendo Cub, respectfully asking if any of them knew of a Kendo sensei, or instructor, who was currently residing in Davao City at the time.

After almost two years of constant communication with the clubs, Kristopher Inting, the Club Manager of IGA KENDO CLUB informed Johnny that a certain Mr. Phillip Lim, a third (3rd) Dan in Kendo, coming from Manila will be residing in Davao. As they say, when one door closes, another opens. At around April 2014, he contacted Phillip Lim Sensei about the possibility of teaching Kendo in Davao. The rest was, as they say, history.

The Davao Kendo Club was officially born on May 31, 2014. The founders of the club were Phillip Lim, as the club sensei, and Johnny T. Lardera, as the very first student. Together with two (2) other members, namely Jasper John Lardera and Janilyn Fe Lardera, who joined in and added to the club, DAVAO KENDO CLUB (DKC) became a reality. The club formally accepted new members just a few months after.

The lack of equipment was not enough to deter them from learning Kendo. Through the guidance of Phillip Lim, 3rd Dan, and the commitment of the club founder and the club members, DAVAO KENDO CLUB continued to grow and prosper.

Present day – DAVAO KENDO CLUB currently owns at least 33 club Bogu (specialized armor for Kendo) donated by the various kendo clubs in Korea through the efforts of Lim- sensei. Matsuda Kazuya, a third (3rd) Dan in Kendo, also joins in and helps with providing instruction to the club.

As of April 2016, The club has 6 batches and have an estimated average number of 45 active Kendoka (kenshins) in attendance – wherein the 1st to 5th batches are already in advanced classes (“Bogu Class”). The club continues to prosper with the guidance and leadership of Phillip Lim sensei. As a matter of fact, just this February 26 2016, two of our members, namely Johnny T. Lardera Jr. (1st Kyu) and Paul Vincent Minoza (3rd Kyu), took the Shodan (1st Dan) Exam. They passed the exam, thus becoming the first ever Shodan (1st Dan) of Davao Kendo Club and the first amongst the Kendoka based in Mindanao hold such rank.
